J.L. Dolson & Sons (Elmore & Elton) Co. was a popular Charlotte, Michigan manufacturer of horse drawn carriages in the early 1900s. Like so many makers of wagons and carriages of the time they entered the American Automobile market in 1904.

The J.L. Dolson & Sons Co. first automobile was a 5 passenger Touring Car that was equipped with a Westerfield two cylinder water cooled engine that developed 15 horsepower. It had an 82 inch wheel base and cost $1450.00.

The 1904 Dolson’s were followed by bigger and more powerful four cylinder Touring Cars and the Cannon Ball Roadster that was guaranteed to do 75 miles per hour. In 1905 the carriage business was phased out and production of the Dolson automobiles increased.

In 1905 The J.L. Dolson & Sons Co. was renamed The Dolson Automobile Co. 1905 Dolson’s consisted of a Model B and Model C. The Dolson Model B was a 103 inch wheelbase Touring Car with a side entrance tonneau equipped with a water cooled four cylinder engine that was rated at 28 horsepower. The Model C was a 90 inch wheelbase Touring car with side entrance tonneau equipped with a water cooled two cylinder engine that was rated at 20 horsepower.

The Dolson line up increased from 2 to 4 different models in 1906. The Dolson Model C was continued in 1906 at a cost of $1250.00. New models consisted of a 5 passenger Model D Touring Car with a 101 inch wheelbase. The Model D was equiped with a two cylinder engine rated at 22 horsepower. The larger 5 passenger Dolson Model E Touring Car was equipped with a 32 horsepower four cylinder water cooled engine.

The very larger 112 inch wheelbase Model F Touring Car was equipped with a water cooled 50 horsepower four cylinder engine. Additional features included 34 x 5 1/2 inch wheels and tires, sliding gear 3 speed transmission and shaft drive.

The Dolson Model F Roadster was called the "Cannon Ball" and new for 1907. The Cannon Ball was equipped with a four cylinder engine that developed 60 horsepower.  Dolson advertisements claimed 75 miles per hour from the light weight Cannon Ball.

A new model H was also produced by The Dolson Automobile Co. in 1907. It had a 111 inch wheelbase and was equipped with a four cylinder engine rated at 40 horsepower.  Fully equipped with was advertised at 2,500.00.
