The American Locomotive Co.
The American Locomotive Company was one of the country’s largest builders of steam locomotives with eight plants in the eastern United States.
In 1905 automobile manufacture began in a Providence, RI plant using the French Berliet as a model. The American Locomotive Automobile Co. of Providence, RI was formed in 1905 and their early automobiles were known as the American Berliet. A couple of years later, the Berliet license was abandoned, and the American Locomotive Automobile Co. began to produce its own designs.
1908 American Locomotive Automobile Co. Magazine Ad
The ALCO was a high quality, high priced American Automobile with huge engines. ALCO boasted that it took a year and seven months to build a single automobile. It also claimed that all parts were interchangeable.
1912 ALCO Berline Limousine Magazine Ad
The 1912 ALCO Berline Limousine was the biggest, luxurious and most expensive of all the American Locomotive Automobile Company’s cars. It sold for $7250.00 with a 6 cylinder engine and $6,000.00 with a four cylinder engine. A less luxurious Limousine sold for $6750.00 with a six cylinder and $5500.00 with a four cylinder.
The Landaulet like the one shown on the right equipped with a six cylinder sold for $6750.00 and $$5550.00 with a four cylinder. Seven passenger Touring Car were priced at $6000.00 for a six cylinder and $4350.00 for a four cylinder. It’s Petit Tonneau 5 passenger Touring Car was priced the same as the big Touring Car.
1912 ALCO Seven Passenger Touring Car
The first ALCO models in 1905 were equipped with a chain driven four cylinder automobiles with 24 horsepower. Introduced in 1907 was a shaft driven four cylinder 40 horsepower engine and the a six cylinder with 60 horsepower in 1909. In 1909 and 1910 ALCO automobiles won the Vanderbilt Cup.
Restored 1911 ALCO Four Passenger Speedster
This 1911 four passenger speedster and a two passenger roadster both were priced at $6,000.00 for a car equipped with a six cylinder engine and $4300.00 for a four cylinder.
